At Jimmy Granger Ford Lincoln Natchitoches, we believe in educating car owners so you can take care of your vehicle correctly. The better you maintain your car, truck or SUV, the longer it will run and the more value it retains. That’s why you should know what each of these car fluids does and how often you should replace it.

Engine Oil

Your engine’s oil is a critical aspect of your running automobile. It keeps your engine lubricated and prevents break down. That’s why most automakers recommend changing the oil every 5,000-10,000 miles, depending on what type of oil you use.

Coolant

It doesn’t matter what is going on with the weather outside of your vehicle; you always need coolant to manage the temperature of your engine. This is commonly called antifreeze and should be checked regularly. Make sure you have enough at least once in the winter and then again in the summer. Consider replacing it completely every two to three years.

Brake Fluid

You need to get to your next location safely which is why you rely on brake fluid. Every time you change your oil, you should ensure that your brake fluid is also full. Then, consider replacing it every two years. If your brakes don’t feel right, make sure you inspect the fluid first.

Transmission Fluid

The transmission fluid keeps your gears working properly. It should be replaced every 50,000 to 100,000 miles depending on your automaker recommendations. It should also be checked every time your oil is changed.

Windshield Wiper Fluid

The windshield washer fluid keeps your view clear while you drive. When it’s empty, you will know because nothing squirts out. Simply stop and fill it up as needed. During cooler months, you’ll want to use an antifreeze mixture instead.
